1. If you want a good story …

S-Town – this is such an amazing story of twists and turns and real people living extraordinary lives. There is also a lot of debate about the ethics of it. In the end, I’m not sure if it was ethical or not but it sure was addictive.

Alone – this 10-part analysis of a woman’s marriage breakdown sounds fascinating. The Atlantic called it “a story that will have you coming back for more” and it was recommended by Leigh Sales on Chat Ten, Looks Three. So it’s on my to-listen list.

Dirty John – About a dodgy boyfriend who turned out to be even dodgier than everyone thought. For me, this was a bit predictable, but friends have loved it and it certainly fits the “compelling” bill.

  1. If you want to understand how people work …

Hidden Brain – I love this podcast that creates easy-to-digest episodes summarising the latest social science research. It’s entertaining. My favourite is still the episode about poker champion Annie Duke, called Stereotype Threat.

Freakonomics Radio – I’ve listened to one episode of this “When Helping Hurts” and I have to admit I was intrigued and challenged by it.

  1. If you want to learn about money …

Planet Money – this is from National Public Radio in the US. My sister-in-law loves it. It breaks down complex financial questions and ideas for the layperson so sounds pretty interesting.

StartUp – Inventors, investors, ideas, the good, bad and ugly. This is for the entrepreneur in you.

  1. If you want to have a laugh and a gossip

Chat 10, Looks 3 – this podcast in which Annabel Crabb and Leigh Sales just talk about cooking, reading and watching TV is like having coffee with your best, smartest girlfriends. I love it and I always have a laugh and come away with some new book or show to check out.

  1. If you want to go to sleep

Sleep with Me – A long, meandering story guaranteed to literally bore you to sleep. I have used it with success many times.
